Rosie Glow from Night Owl Quilting

Joanne and her sister Patrice made this quilt when Joanne was in town for a visit.  The pattern is called Rosie Glow and was found in Best Weekend Quilts 2013.

Joanne knew exactly how she wanted it quilted.  The Gingersnap pantograph in the body of the quilt, and the borders quilted like they were in the magazine.

Joanne opted to have Marion finish the binding before it was returned, so it is just ready to enjoy!

Imperial Garden from Night Owl Quilting

Louise made this lovely Queen size quilt.  The pattern came from the Nov/Dec 2008 issue of Fons and Porter Love of Quilting Magazine.  It is called Imperial Garden and was designed by Jan Douglas.  The original pattern had two additional borders, but Louise decided to stop at 90" x 90".

Louise knew she wanted custom quilting and asked for it to be quilted less densely than the example in the magazine.  I tried to accomplish this by only quilting in the ditch for some of the smaller borders/sashing and not using any dense fills.

The navy border and ...

Dogs! from Night Owl Quilting

I had two great dog themed quilts come into my studio in one week.  First up is this one by Valerie.  It was a quilt along with her quilting group and she decided to feature some dog themed fabrics that she had been collecting.

We opted for a simple meander over the body of the quilt and a paw print border motif.

Wendy made this quilt for her brother-in-law who has loved his pet goldens.  The request was for simple quilting, and nothing cutesy like bones or paws or hearts.  Wendy and I discussed a number of options and settled ...

City Blooms and more for Sandra from Night Owl Quilting

Sandra brought this City Blooms quilt that is a pattern designed by Flaurie and Finch.  The top was started by a friend who passed away and Sandra saw it to the finish line.

When deciding on a quilting design and what thread to use across the lights and darks, I came up with a fun idea.  Sandra liked the idea of freehand wavy lines and I suggested using three shades of blue thread that would blend better across the light, medium and dark sections of the quilt.   The threads are all Innovatech -Azure, Largo and Blue.

You really have to ...

Hummingbird Bouquet from Night Owl Quilting

Annette made this great modern Hummingbird quilt.  The pattern is by Corinne Sovey Designs and was originally published in the American Patchwork and Quilting magazine under the name Birds and Blooms. It is now available as a stand alone pattern under the name Hummingbird Bouquet.  Did you know that one of the names for a group of hummingbirds is called a Bouquet?  Cool right?

I used very blendy thread in each of the sections.  Wavy lines in the background, simple lines in the throat and breast and flowers, and some feathers for interest in the in the head, wing and ...

Florally from Night Owl Quilting

Bridy brought this lovely quilt and I was very intrigued to know what the pattern was as I didn’t think I had seen anything quite like it before.  It is called Florally by Heck Yes Sew Co.   Bridy chose a palette of Fabelism Sprout Wovens and shared that this was the first time she sewed curves!

I asked Bridy if she would be open to some simple custom quilting on this one and she was happy with that idea.  We flipped through some quilting books to look at examples of different background fills as she pointed out a few ...

Incidental Refractions from Night Owl Quilting

Val made this quilt as a Mystery Project to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Canadian Quilter's Association.  The pattern is called Incidental Refraction and was designed by Border Creek Station.

There was a lot of open space to accept some doodle/graffiti/busy quilting and when I asked Val what she thought, she was all in.

I knew that I wanted to contrast the quilting in the background to the strips and stars.  I added some straight lines and star motifs and a few curves in the the taupe sections, and stitched in the ditch around the purple ...

Saving Liberty from Night Owl Quilting

This beautiful quilt was made by Linda.  The pattern is called Saving Liberty by Mel Storey Patchwork.  It is a mix of English paper piecing, hand applique, and foundation paper piecing.  The floral fabrics are Liberty Tana Lawn, and the background is linen, including some pieces from family heirloom napkins.

Coming up with the quilting plan is always a fun challenge.  Linda likes a lighter hand with the quilting and is not fond of feathers.  My first batch of doodles weren't quite the right fit,  but after a great telephone conversation a plan came together that we were both ...

Over By The Pond from Night Owl Quilting

Lea made this fun "Over By the Pond" wall hanging.    The pattern is still available through Quilting Daily and would be a fun project for someone who enjoys Foundation Paper Piecing.

Lea requested custom quilting.   I mostly stitched around the paper pieced critters and plants.  The frogs needed a few extra quilting lines.  They will be complete when Lea adds the button eyes.

I added a watery background fill, curls in the inner border and a leafy feather in the outer border.  In the strips between the critters I added a motif that matched the fabric that Lea used.  Once ...

Birch Street Collage from Night Owl Quilting

This is Sandra's version of the Fiberworks pattern called Birch Street Collage.    I was a bit hesitant to take this one on at first as sometimes certain brands fusible web in multiple layers can cause stitching issues and gummed up needles. Sandra knew what products she used, so I felt better and thankfully I had no issues.

Trying to stitch the individual fused pieces down was not an option I was willing to consider as I was worried about causing fraying along the edges, and the number of thread changes required would have made this a very time consuming ...

Stars in the Garden from Night Owl Quilting

Ruth, a new to me client wowed me when she pulled this amazing quilt of out her bag!
The pattern is called Stars in the Garden from Piece O' Cake Designs.

Ruth is a master of hand applique!  I stitched around all the applique with Micro Quilter thread which is 100wt, so it is a virtually invisible.   Ruth opted for Quilter's Dream Puff batting and the loft it gave to the applique was very pleasing.

In order to keep the quilt soft we opted to not fully fill the background with echoes or pebbles, but just filled in the ...

Cross Stitched Flowers from Night Owl Quilting

This was a very unique quilt that came my way recently.   Olga stitched the 4 preprinted panel sections together and competed all the cross stich flowers and borders on this top, but decided she was no longer up to hand quilting the project.

Olga purchased this kit from the Mary Maxim catalogue years ago, and it was stamped with the cross stitch designs and quilting lines.  Olga asked if I could custom quilt this one by following the pre-stamped lines.  This was a request that was new for me, but I couldn't see a reason why it wouldn't ...

Vultures Rock Quilting Project from From My Carolina Home

Yesterday, my internet friend, Vicki, and I had plans to meet at the Asheville Quilt show. Unfortunately, hurricane Helene had other ideas. We got notice that morning that the show was canceled for the day, so we decided to meet for just a bit at a local breakfast spot. But it was closed when we got there! We were able to sit on a covered porch while it rained for a half hour, then they had to get on the road home to stay ahead of the worst of the wind and rain that was coming. I was happy we ...

MPQ 2025 Raffle Quilt from Night Owl Quilting

Earlier this spring I had the pleasure of quilting this jaw dropper!  This quilt is the 2025 Manitoba Prairie Quilter's Raffle Quilt.  The draw will take place at the Quilt Reflections Quilt Show in Winnipeg that is being held April 11-12. (I do have tickets to sell to anyone local.)

The fabric used in this quilt, including the back is from the Whale Song collection from Northcott fabrics.

The makers of the quilt left the quilting plan up to me, but they did say overall they preferred less dense quilting to very heavy quilting.  This quilt definitely required a ...

Ghost Party from Night Owl Quilting

Reneta made this Ghost Party quilt using the Sweet 'n Spookier collection from Art Gallery Fabrics.  The Ghost Party pattern is from Wooly Petals.

None of the pantographs that I initially suggested were feeling quite right for Reneta, so she asked if I could do some freehand quilting instead.  She suggested handwriting the word "Boo" and then the idea was born.

In the background squares I used a hot pink thread and added loops and wrote the word "boo" every so often.

For the ghosts, I stiched around the perimeter and the eyes and then filled in the rest with ...

Rose Anne's Scrappy Triangles from Night Owl Quilting

Rose Anne brought this lovely quilt in for some custom quilting.  A few members of my local quilt guild got inspired to do some paper piecing and followed The Year of Scrappy Triangles blog post by Leila Gardunia.  https://www.leilagardunia.com/blog/year-of-scrappy-triangles   I had seen some photos of this quilt as Rose Anne was working on it and had thought her chosen background was black, but it is actually a beautiful deep green!  It is a lovely compliment to all the batiks she found in her stash.

Initially I thought feathers would be the perfect suggestion for the ...

Mountainside from Night Owl Quilting

Reneta made this quilt for her daughter's wedding and I can finally share it now that the day has come.   The quilt pattern is called Mountainside by Lella Boutique and features the Smoke and Rust fabric collection.  McKenna and Cole had planned an intimate wedding in Jasper, Alberta so this quilt is extra fitting.  (Unfortunately due to the recent forest fires, they had to relocate their wedding, but it will still be taking place in the mountains.)

I have quilted many many quilts for Reneta and we have done everything for a simple meander to complex undertakings like adding ...

Custom Quilting the Bird Quilt from From My Carolina Home

Here we go, after doing some stand-and-stare, I had made the decision to custom quilt this quilt. Settle in for a long and picture heavy post, with lots of detail for other quilters. The only thing I knew from the outset was that I wanted feathers in the strips. I loaded it on the longarm on a rainy day, and got started. Because I was going to quilt from top to bottom, then come back from bottom to top, I needed to stitch all the edges down first. This always makes me nervous, that I won’t get the tension ...

Just Takes Two - 100 Block Quilt from Night Owl Quilting

Leslie brought this amazing sampler quilt for some custom quilting.  The pattern was a mystery from Sentimental Stitches back in 2012 called “Just Takes 2”.  I have the same quilt top pieced but unquilted as yet.  Mine has a white background and be a variety of bright colours so it hardly seems like the same pattern at all!  Twice a month we received a minimum of two block patterns.  The pattern is now available for purchase as a complete single pattern.

Leslie left the quilting designs up to me.  We talked a bit when she dropped it off, but it ...

Vintage Lonestar from Night Owl Quilting

Cynthia brought this vintage top that was made by her great grandmother.  She decided it was time to get it finished and enjoyed instead of hiding in the closet.  It was my pleasure to work on this family treasure.

We decided on some light custom quilting.  Continuous curves in the star diamonds and free flowing open feathers in the background.

I'm sure that the background fabric was flour sacks and it has a feeling that just can't be replicated.

Cynthia opted to have Marion bind her quilt using the same fabric she used on the back.  This modern ...
